Few sights can inspire like the sight of the Point Reyes lighthouse perched hundreds of feet above the dramatic Pacific Ocean. Point Reyes is and always has been a treacherous obstacle for mariners at sea. Built in 1870, the lighthouse was in service for 105 years before being retired by a new automated light beacon below the lighthouse. The National Park Service now maintains the historic lighthouse for the many visitors who come each year. The lighthouse is in excellent working condition. The 300 steps leading down to the lighthouse are open, weather permitting.
